A first sighting.
The expectations I very deeply held onto to see Orcas were in all reality… unrealistic. So we’re going to chalk up this peaceful and brief sighting of a killer whale family (baby included!) cruising through Departure Bay in Nanaimo - merely minutes before boarding the ferry - as 100% pure luck & a pay off in the art of persistence & the practice of just keep showing up.
After putting my camera down in complete awe and disbelief, a BC Ferries employee approached and asked if I had gotten the shot and went on to say that in all of his 15 years of working this port, this was his first time seeing Orcas come through here. I don’t know if many others around me saw them as well, since it happened so quickly my first reaction was to zoom and shoot but I am so thankful I had that whirlwind of a few seconds to experience these incredible creatures.
